Almost every single hour of every single day, something happens that makes me think, “Please don’t let me forget this.” It can be something absolutely adorable, like him hollering “Mom!” from across the house and answering my “What?” with gibberish nonsense but with a smile on his face. It can be something so simple that, for some reason, grabs me simply by its sheer innocence, like his explosion of the backyard tree this afternoon. Whatever it is, the thought of losing that one small glimpse of his childhood terrifies me. And so I take pictures and pray that, in my old age or even just in the hectic years that come, I’m able to remember how happy Mitchell is, and I am, right now, in this moment.
